What is a Shopify product image?
A Shopify product image is the photo a merchant uploads to the "Images" section of a product in the Shopify admin. Most themes render these images at a 1:1 square ratio on collection pages and at a similar ratio on the product detail page, and Shopify's built-in zoom-on-hover view pops up a sharp, magnified crop of the same image. Shopify's Help Center image guidelines give recommended pixel dimensions (1000 × 1000 to 3000 × 3000 for square, with 2048 × 2048 as the practical sweet spot) and accept square (1:1), portrait (4:5) and landscape (16:9) aspect ratios.
This resizer outputs the 2048 × 2048 square by default because that is the size at which Shopify's zoom view is sharp; the 4:5 and 16:9 ratios are available for merchants whose catalogue reads better at those shapes. It does not claim theme-specific compliance — focal-point pinning, collection page layout and slideshow sizing live in the theme's settings, and staying within a documented aspect ratio is the merchant's responsibility.
Recommended Shopify product image sizes
Shopify does not publish a single mandatory pixel dimension the way Amazon Seller Central does for the main image. What its Help Center documents is a recommended pixel dimension, an upload limit, and a short list of accepted formats:
- Square 2048 × 2048 (1:1). Shopify's published recommendation for square product photos. Larger than the 800 × 800 minimum the zoom-on-hover view requires, and small enough that page-load performance stays predictable across themes.
- Portrait 1600 × 2000 (4:5). Not a documented default — included here because every built-in Shopify theme renders a 4:5 portrait image without distortion. Useful for merchants whose theme is designed around a taller product grid or for catalogues that read better in portrait.
- Landscape 2048 × 1152 (16:9). Same caveat: not a documented default, but every built-in theme accepts a 16:9 landscape image. Common for hero shots, banners and products that are wider than tall.
Upload ceiling per file: 20 MB (the Shopify Help Center's documented limit). The Shopify admin accepts JPEG and PNG uploads, plus WebP, GIF and HEIC — the broader format list is what the upload pipeline accepts in practice. Shopify's CDN is documented to automatically resize uploads for the requesting device, which is why a single PNG upload is usually enough — there is no need to also upload a WebP copy, because Shopify re-encodes the source at the edge. See the Shopify Help Center image guidelines and the Shopify Blog image-size guide for the canonical wording.

Note that Shopify does not document a single mandatory pixel dimension the way Amazon Seller Central does for its main image. The 2048 × 2048 default is a recommendation, and three aspect ratios are accepted (1:1, 4:5 and 16:9). Shopify's CDN re-encodes the upload at the edge, so the merchant only uploads one file; theme-specific layout decisions (focal-point pinning, collection-page grid) remain the theme's responsibility.
Quick Answer
The Shopify Product Image Resizer takes one product photo (PNG, JPG or WebP) and outputs a single PNG sized to one of three Shopify-recommended shapes: Square 2048 × 2048 (the Shopify default), Portrait 1600 × 2000 (4:5), or Landscape 2048 × 1152 (16:9). The source is letterboxed (not cropped) so the entire product stays visible, and the merchant can choose Keep Original background or a pure White Background canvas.
How it works
- 1 Pick a Shopify shape. Choose Square 2048 × 2048 (the Shopify default), Portrait 1600 × 2000 (4:5), or Landscape 2048 × 1152 (16:9).
- 2 Upload a product photo. PNG, JPG or WebP up to 10 MB. The image is letterboxed onto the chosen canvas so the full product stays visible.

Download the PNG. Save
shopify-product-image-<shape>.pngand upload it as a product image on your Shopify store.
Requirements
Supported input
PNG, JPG, JPEG or WebP, up to 10 MB. Any aspect ratio; the source is letterboxed onto the chosen canvas so the full product stays visible.
Output format
A single PNG file named shopify-product-image-<shape>.png, where <shape> is one of square, portrait, landscape.
What it does not do
No background removal, no AI retouch, no theme-specific focal-point pinning. The source is letterboxed onto the chosen canvas; theme placement and content remain the merchant's responsibility.
Before you generate
Three decisions change the output. None of them is set on the tool side; each one is a choice you make before clicking Resize for Shopify.
1. Pick the shape that matches your theme.
If your theme renders collection grids as 1:1 squares, pick Square. If the demo shows taller-than-wide cards, Portrait will match. If the catalogue leans on a wide hero or banner format, Landscape lines up with that. The shape you upload is what the theme will crop or letterbox around, so matching the theme's native grid prevents distortion. When in doubt, pick Square — every built-in Shopify theme handles 1:1 cleanly.
2. Decide whether the background matters.
Keep Original preserves the photo as it was shot, which is the right default for lifestyle and on-figure apparel shots. White Background flattens the source onto a pure-white canvas; pick that only if you want a catalogue-wide uniform look or if your theme displays products against a coloured card where the original background would clash. Shopify does not require a white background for product images, unlike Amazon's main-image rule, so this is a design choice, not a compliance step.
3. Upload at or above the canvas size.
For the sharpest 2048 × 2048 output, upload a source of at least 2048 pixels on its longer side. A 600-pixel source scaled up will look soft in the zoom view. The resizer never upscales — it scales the source down (or letterboxes it at its native scale), so a small upload stays small.
What this tool does not decide
The resizer is a deterministic pixel transform: it places the source photo onto a chosen canvas at a chosen aspect ratio. The following remain the merchant's responsibility, because they depend on the store, the theme or the catalogue and the tool has no view into any of them:
- Whether the shape matches the theme. The resizer does not know which theme you use. If your theme renders 4:5 cards but you upload a 16:9 source, the theme letterboxes the result. Pick the shape that fits the theme.
- Whether the focal point survives the resize. A product shot where the subject sits in the corner will still sit in the corner after a 1:1 letterbox. Theme focal-point pinning lives in the theme editor, not the image file.
- Whether the catalogue is consistent. Mixed ratios on one collection page tend to look uneven. The tool can resize each photo; it cannot decide what ratio the catalogue should adopt.
- Whether the colour matches Shopify's renderer. The resizer preserves the source pixels. If the source uses an Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB profile, the browser may render it washed out. Convert to sRGB before uploading if your photo came from a wide-gamut camera or a design tool.
- Whether the upload succeeds. Shopify's upload pipeline accepts JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF and HEIC and rejects anything outside that list; the resizer accepts the same list locally and cannot predict what your specific Shopify admin will do on the receiving end.
Common Shopify product image mistakes
Most listing issues come from a mismatch between the source photo and the chosen canvas, or from uploading a file the Shopify admin cannot accept. These are the cases that come up most often.
- Picking the wrong aspect ratio for your theme. Square (1:1) is the safe default for every built-in Shopify theme. Portrait (4:5) only looks right on themes that are designed to render product images taller than wide, and landscape (16:9) only fits themes with a wide focal area. Pick the shape that matches your theme before generating the PNG.
- Uploading a source smaller than the chosen canvas. Shopify does not enforce a minimum source size at upload time, but the zoom-on-hover view is sharpest at or above 2048 pixels on the longer side. A 600-pixel source scaled up to 2048 by 2048 will look soft in the zoom view. Aim for a source at least as large as the canvas you pick.
- Mimicking Amazon's white-background rule. Shopify does not require a white background on product images, unlike Amazon's main-image rule. Most themes display product images on the theme's own card background, which is usually white or off-white but not always. Keep Original is the right default for most merchants; choose White Background only if you have a specific reason to flatten the source onto pure white.
- Uploading a vector file or a 30 MB source. The Shopify admin accepts JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF and HEIC up to 20 MB per file. SVG and other vector formats are not in that list, and over-20-MB uploads fail the admin's check. If your source is a vector, rasterise it first. If the source is over 20 MB, run it through the Image Compressor first to bring it under the limit.
- Relying on this tool for theme-specific sizing. Theme focal-point pinning, collection page layout and slideshow sizing live in the theme's settings, not the image file. This resizer produces a canvas at the documented Shopify aspect ratios; how the theme crops or zooms that image is theme-specific.
