🧶 Etsy Product Image Resizer

Etsy Product Image Resizer

Turn one product photo into a 2000 × 2000 square PNG ready to upload to an Etsy listing. The source is letterboxed onto the canvas so the full product stays visible — no cropping, no AI background removal.

For: Etsy sellers who need a single, square listing photo without spending time in a design tool. · How it works: pick a background → upload → preview → download.

Etsy's Help Center recommends at least 2000 pixels on the shortest side. This tool's 2000 × 2000 output meets that documented minimum on both axes — square, not the 4:3 ratio Etsy recommends, but in-policy. See Sources below.

What is an Etsy product image?

An Etsy product image is one of the up-to-ten photos a seller uploads to a listing in the Etsy shop admin. Etsy renders those photos on search results, category pages, the shop home and the listing detail page, and supports an in-page zoom view on the listing itself. The Etsy Seller Handbook is the canonical entry point for Etsy's current photo and video guidance.

Unlike Amazon Seller Central's main-image rule, Etsy does not impose a strict white-background requirement on listing photos, and a square aspect ratio is not the only option Etsy publishes. What Etsy does publish is a minimum pixel dimension, a recommended aspect ratio, a maximum file size, and a maximum photo count per listing — quoted directly from Etsy's Help Center in the next section.

Etsy photo specs at a glance

The numbers below come from Etsy's first-party Help Center and Etsy Seller Handbook — not from third-party guides. Each row cites the Etsy source where the fact is published, so the seller can verify directly.

  • Minimum 2000 pixels on the image's shortest side

  • At least 1500 pixels on the other side, recommended for a 4:3 ratio

  • Recommended aspect ratio: 4:3 (Etsy lists 4:3 as the recommendation; this tool outputs a 1:1 square, which still meets the 2000-pixel minimum on both axes)

  • Maximum file size: 20 MB per image

  • Up to 10 photos per listing plus 1 video

  • Shoppers can zoom in on photos, so higher resolution is preferable

The 2000 × 2000 canvas is the tool preset — it is also the smallest square that meets Etsy's documented 2000-pixel shortest-side minimum on both axes. Etsy recommends 4:3; this tool outputs a 1:1 square, which is in-policy but not Etsy's first recommendation. Sellers who want 4:3 exactly should use a design tool instead.

Quick Answer

The Etsy Product Image Resizer takes one product photo (PNG, JPG or WebP) and outputs a single 2000 × 2000 square PNG ready to upload to an Etsy listing. The source is letterboxed (not cropped) so the entire product stays visible, and the seller can choose Keep Original background or a White Background canvas. Etsy's Help Center recommends at least 2000 pixels on the shortest side — the 2000 × 2000 output meets that minimum on both axes, though Etsy recommends a 4:3 aspect ratio.

How it works

  1. 1 Pick a background. Choose Keep Original (default) to preserve the source photo's background, or White Background to flatten onto a pure-white canvas. White background is a tool preparation option — Etsy does not impose a documented white-background rule on listing photos.
  2. 2 Upload a product photo. PNG, JPG or WebP up to 10 MB. The image is letterboxed onto a 2000 × 2000 canvas so the full product stays visible.
  3. 3 Download the PNG. Save etsy-product-image-2000x2000.png and upload it to the listing in your Etsy shop admin.

Requirements

Supported input

PNG, JPG, JPEG or WebP, up to 10 MB. Any aspect ratio; the source is letterboxed onto the 2000 × 2000 canvas so the full product stays visible.

Output format

A single PNG file named etsy-product-image-2000x2000.png.

What it does not do

No background removal, no AI retouch, no Etsy-category detection. The source is letterboxed onto a square canvas; final Etsy listing approval is Etsy's decision, not the tool's.

Before you generate

Two decisions change the output. Both are choices you make before clicking Resize for Etsy.

1. Decide whether the background matters.

Keep Original preserves the photo as it was shot, which is the right default for lifestyle Etsy listings and on-figure apparel shots. White Background flattens the source onto a pure-white canvas; pick that only if you want a catalogue-wide uniform look. Etsy does not require a white background for product images the way Amazon's main-image rule does, so this is a design choice, not a compliance step.

2. Upload at or above Etsy's documented minimum.

Etsy's Help Center recommends at least 2000 pixels on the shortest side. For the sharpest 2000 × 2000 output, upload a source of at least 2000 pixels on its shortest side. A smaller source is scaled uniformly to fit the canvas, which softens fine detail in Etsy's zoom view.

What this tool does not decide

The resizer is a deterministic pixel transform: it places the source photo onto a 2000 × 2000 canvas at the chosen background. The following remain the seller's responsibility, because they depend on Etsy's policy and the tool has no view into it:

  • Whether Etsy accepts the listing. Etsy controls listing approval, search ranking and category rules. The resizer only prepares the image file; final compliance is Etsy's decision.
  • Whether 4:3 is the right ratio for a specific listing. Etsy recommends a 4:3 aspect ratio; this tool outputs a 1:1 square, which still meets Etsy's 2000-pixel minimum on both axes. Sellers who want 4:3 exactly should use a design tool.
  • Whether the source PNG has transparency. Etsy does not honour transparency in listing photos — transparent areas render as black on the storefront. Pick White Background or flatten the source on a solid background before upload.
  • Whether the focal point survives the resize. A product shot where the subject sits in the corner will still sit in the corner after a 1:1 letterbox. Re-frame before uploading if you need the subject centred.
  • Whether the colour matches Etsy's renderer. The resizer preserves the source pixels. If the source uses an Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB profile, the browser may render it washed out. Convert to sRGB before uploading if your photo came from a wide-gamut camera or a design tool.

Common Etsy product image mistakes

  • Uploading a source smaller than Etsy's documented minimum. Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels on the shortest side. A 600-pixel source scaled up to 2000 × 2000 will look soft in Etsy's zoom view. Aim for a source at least 2000 pixels on the shortest side.
  • Mimicking Amazon's white-background rule. Etsy does not require a white background on listing photos the way Amazon requires one for its main image. Most Etsy listings render fine with the source's original background. Pick White Background only if you have a specific reason to flatten the source onto pure white.
  • Uploading a transparent PNG. Etsy does not honour transparency; transparent areas render as black on the storefront. Pick White Background or flatten the source on a solid background before upload.
  • Uploading a vector file or an over-size source. The resizer accepts raster formats (PNG, JPG, JPEG, WebP) up to 10 MB. SVG and other vector formats are not in that list. If your source is a vector, rasterise it first. If the source is over 10 MB, run it through the Image Compressor first to bring it under the limit.
  • Relying on this tool for category-specific Etsy rules. Etsy product categories (handmade, vintage, digital download, etc.) carry their own rules. This resizer does not detect categories and does not apply category-specific transformations. The seller is responsible for any category-specific Etsy requirements.
